How do Airports Make Money?

Like almost everything else in life, airports seek to earn money. Whilst not always run for profit (though many are), running an airport is not cheap and operators seek to offset this cost by bringing in money from the airport itself. Unlike other types of businesses that have only a couple of income streams, airports usually have several income streams that can be put into two categories: aeronautical revenue and non-aeronautical revenue. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Landing Fees Passenger Service Fees Hangar Fees Parking Fees Advertising Thanks to post-9/11 laws dictating that you must arrive to the airport several hours before your flight departs, most passengers end up spending these several hours in the airport terminal wai...

Which Countries Don’t Have an Airport?

For most countries, having an airport is not just useful, but an economic necessity. Not only do they serve as a gateway for the transportation of people and goods, they are also huge job creators both directly and indirectly. Yet despite these benefits, a select few countries do not have a single airport within their borders, often for one of a multitude of reasons. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Liechtenstein Located between the Swiss Alps and Austria, Liechtenstein has no airport on account of its terrain and population. A country of barely 40,000 people, Liechtenstein simply doesn't have a population large enough to justify spending millions of dollars building an airport. It simply wouldn't be cost-effective. Secondly, the majority...

The Impact of the Cold War on Aviation

Last week, we covered the impact of WWII on aviation. This got me thinking, what was the impact of the Cold War on aviation? The Cold War was a war that wasn't really a war... at least not by traditional means. After WWII, the US and USSR, who had once been allies, now became enemies. Instead of fighting a traditional war, the US and USSR set up proxies that would fight one another. Stirring up rebellions and revolts in several countries and rigging elections in others. During these proxy wars, both Russians and Americans would aid, by ending aircraft and pilots to train new recruits. This had a profound effect on aviation throughout the cold war! The Impact of WWII on Aviation

Yesterday marked the 75th anniversary of the end of WWII in Europe. So this had me thinking, what was the impact of WWII on aviation? WWII impacted every industry that was around in the 1940's. Whilst this only comprises what was developed during the Second World War, there is likely no way of knowing the entire impact of WWII on aviation! (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Save Aircraft Manufacturers The 1930's hit every industry incredibly hard, thanks to the Great Depression. Many aircraft manufacturers were forced to close as there was no one to buy their aircraft. Some aircraft manufacturers were able to change their business and provide other goods. This affected major players in all countries, including the legendary William Boeing and ...

Why are airport queues getting so long?

Airport queues. The bane of travelers everywhere. Once, airport queues were very small, only being present when boarding an aircraft, now, you can expect up to four queues at the airport, for one journey! But that is not the issue... Many people have complained that the queues themselves are getting far longer, but is that entirely the case? Airport queues are indeed getting longer. As a collective, we are flying more, which means there are more flights in and out of airports. And airports cannot keep up with this increase in air travel, as they simply don't have the funding necessary. This leads to longer airport queues, whether at passport control, security, or physically boarding the aircraft! (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); How have airport queues g...
