Who Are The World’s Largest Aircraft Manufacturers?

Though airlines get a bad rep for being somewhat of an oligopoly, when it comes to the supply of aircraft, there are remarkably few. Indeed, the two largest aircraft manufacturers - Airbus and Boeing - control nearly 90% of the market. So who are the other main players? For the purposes of this article, we are only looking at companies who physically produce aircraft - not engines, avionics and the like - and we're only talking about companies that are currently active, not ones that are defunct. Size is being determined on several factors, including the range of aircraft currently produced, number of employees, number of locations worldwide, revenue and brand recognition. Not to mention market share. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Airbus ...

Remembering Hawker Siddeley: The Rise (And Fall) of Britain’s Aviation Powerhouse

Whilst a giant from the day it was founded until the day it ceased trading, Hawker Siddeley were one of Britain's preeminent aircraft manufacturers, arguably being the largest in Britain during the 1960's and 1970's. Yet, for most of its existence, Hawker Siddeley didn't produce aircraft under its own name - instead letting its subsidiaries produce their own aircraft under their own name. It was only in the mid-1960's when Hawker Siddeley began making its own aircraft! (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Pre-Hawker Siddeley: Hawker Aircraft In June 1912, Thomas Sopwith, a wealthy British sportsman with an interest in aviation, established the Sopwith Aviation Company with the help of Fred Sigrist, an aircraft engineer and Sopwith's close friend. ...

A320 vs 737: The Best Short Haul Aircraft?

The A320 and 737 are the most common short haul aircraft. However, most airlines only operate one variant or the other. This has caused many to wonder which of the two aircraft are truly superior. Whilst there have been several contenders (most notably the MC-21 and C919), the 737 series and A320 series have always been the two best. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); A320 vs 737: The Basics Before we can decide which aircraft is better between the A320 and 737, we first need to know a little bit of background. A320 As with many other Airbus jets, the A320 has its origins in the A300. The A300 was envisioned to be the start of a family of aircraft that would fly the world. The A320 was the shortest of this family, designed for shorter routes...

Il-96 vs A340: The best failure?

I rarely compare Airbus aircraft with another aircraft. Both the Il-96 and A340 are similar aircraft. Both are long haul, quad jets that are considered failures. So which is the best? (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Il-96 vs A340: The Basics During the 1970's and 80's both airlines and manufacturers saw that people were flying now more than ever. As such, both airlines and manufacturers tried to capitalize on it. The results were that Ilyushin began work on the Il-96 and Airbus began work on their A340. Il-96 During the 1970's, Ilyushin began to re-engineer their first quad jet aircraft, the Il-86. They wanted to engineer the Il-86 to be shorter, longer range and more technological advanced. This saw the Il-96 being issued with cutti...

Why Bombardier and Embraer can’t beat Airbus and Boeing…

Bombardier and Embraer are the little brothers to Airbus and Boeing. They admire and want to be like their older brothers, but seldom are. Many people talk about how Bombardier and Embraer can't beat Airbus and Boeing, but here's why... Bombardier and Embraer can't beat Airbus and Boeing because of their size. Bombardier is simply too small to compete with Airbus, and Embraer is simply too small to compete with Boeing. Instead of competing directly, they choose to make smaller aircraft, which don't compete with anything Airbus or Boeing make, and thus, Boeing and Airbus don't have any reason to try to consolidate with them or try to force them into bankruptcy. Often, Embraer and Boeing team up for joint ventures, such as the E-Jet family, the same can be said for Bombardier ...

Airbus vs Boeing: Who is truly superior?

Since Boeing's acquisition of McDonnell Douglas in 1995, there have been two major aircraft manufacturers: Airbus and Boeing. Since then, almost everyone has been involved in an Airbus vs Boeing debate at some point. But which is the truly superior aircraft manufacturer? My aim will be to come up with two answers to the question. Which one do pilots prefer more? Which do av geeks (people who like aviation) like? And which do passengers prefer more? Naturally, with a topic like this one, there is no clear cut answer, and the answer I give is purely based on my own experiences, and a general consensus from other airline pilots and frequent flyers I know. But before we can get into which is truly the best, we need to know the history, products and the reasons people think one is...

Airbus A350 vs Boeing 787

Since the release of both the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787, there has been one burning question: "Who would win? Airbus A350 vs Boeing 787?" and has lead airlines to ask themselves "Which one is best for what we need?" Because, both do the same job* or do they? Whilst the A350 and 787 are both built for long distance, they are both serving wildly different markets. The question of "Airbus A350 vs Boeing 787?" comes down to metrics rather than how the two aircraft compete with one another. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); The question of "Airbus A350 vs Boeing 787?" also comes down to company allegiances rather than performance. We will never truly know the answer to"Airbus A350 vs Boeing 787?" as the two aircraft do not serve on the same routes...

Aviation: past vs present

Aviation, just like many industries has changed a lot over the past 100 years. Whereas once, Orville Wright had to hold onto his aircraft for dear life, now, we can travel in relative luxury. But just how much has air travel changed in the past 100 years? (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); The beginning of commercial aviation I'm not going to talk about the various attempts before the Wright brothers to fly, dating back all the way to the Ancient Greeks at least. On December 17 1903 at Kitty Hawk, Orville Wright took the first powered flight of a heavier than air aircraft. Thus making him the first human to achieve powered flight. After that, aviation remained still largely obscure and disregarded. The Golden age of Aviation After the two world war...

What is the future of business aviation? Business aviation in 10 years…

Two weeks ago, we did an article on "What is the future of aviation?" on that article, we were asked whether we'd do an article focusing on the future of business aviation. So what is the future of business aviation? The future of business aviation can be separated down into  categories: Speed Efficiency Luxury Price Consolidation (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); What is the future of business aviation in terms of speed? We have regularly covered the potential for the speed of business aircraft to increase in the coming decade. The Aerion AS2 is set to be the main supersonic business jet in the coming decade. The AS2 is set to be the fastest business jet ever created, even faster than recently released business jets like the G700 and Global 8000. Wh...
